Gross Motor Letter Tracing

The kids love outside time and I have been trying to create more activities outside before the weather here takes a turn for the freezing cold! The only materials I needed for this activity were chalk and toy cars the boys could push around. Both of which I already had!

This activity is part of our FREE Preschool and Toddler curriculum’s Transportation Theme. If you like this activity, you are sure to enjoy the others that go along with this theme.

This activity didn’t take any set-up except for me gathering the calk from my art shelf. First, I took the chalk and drew large uppercase letters on the sidewalk. After I drew a letter, the boys were jumping onto the letter and shouting the name of it.

Once I had all 26 letters of the alphabet on the ground, I went and got one of the toy cars and demonstrated how to trace the letters with the car. I only had to demonstrate one letter before all of the boys had grabbed a car and were zooming around the letters. This activity gets children familiar with letter shapes and letter names. For preschool children, try demonstrating the proper formation of each letter as they zoom around the letters. This Handwriting Without Tears guide is a great resource to help you teach children proper letter formation.

Extension Activity

You can extend this activity to teach children how to draw numbers and shapes, too. Just write out the numbers or shapes on the ground with your chalk instead of letters.

This activity was so simple, I can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. Sometimes I get so caught up in trying to make every activity “Pinterest Perfect”. In my experience, kids don’t care if an activity looks exactly like the activity I found on Pinterest or if the activity took a long time to set-up, they just care that they have a fun activity to do and that I am there with them.

What activities have you done with your children that took little to no set-up and really engaged your kids? Tell me about it in the comments down below!
